This speciality diagnoses, treats and prevents disease of the tissues that support the teeth (periodontium). These are the gums, bone and periodontal ligament.
Periodontal disease occurs when these tissues that support the teeth become inflamed due to continuous deposits of bacteria, known as bacterial plaque. It is one of the most common diseases and in Spain it is estimated to affect approximately 85% of people over 35.
It has two phases:
· Gingivitis: The superficial inflammation of gums characterised by redness and bleeding. If left untreated it can progress to periodontitis.
· Periodontitis: The deep inflammation of gums and other tissues that support the teeth. Bone loss begins to occur. It may be concentrated in some areas or affect the whole mouth. If left untreated it can lead to tooth loss.
